Overdose Information

Recognizing an Overdose

Signs of opioid overdose may include:

  • Unresponsiveness or unconsciousness
  • Slow, shallow breathing or no breathing
  • Blue or purple lips and fingernails
  • Pale, clammy skin
  • Gurgling sounds

What to Do

  1. Call 911 immediately
  2. Administer naloxone (Narcan) if available
  3. Try to keep the person awake and breathing
  4. Place them on their side if unconscious but breathing
  5. Stay with them until help arrives

Virginia's Good Samaritan Law: Virginia law provides protection from prosecution for people who call for help during an overdose. Don't be afraid to call 911.
